May 25, 2011

A floating football pitch that fills your heart with courage

What an inspiring TV commercial! And it’s based on a true story!

The story took place in the fishing village of Koh Panyee,Thailand in 1986.  A bunch of young football fans wanted to run their own football team, but there was simply no space on such a rocky island.  To practice football, the kids collected scrap woods and built their own floating football pitch. With their passion and superb skills gained from practicing on such a tiny piece of floating dock, they won the youth champions of southern Thailand for seven consecutive years.

Now if you ever hear anyone telling you that you can’t do this or that (it maybe your own voice frightening yourself), don’t listen to those distructive voices.  The group of kids were mad enough to pursue their passion for football and wonderful things just came out of it!

As the advertisement proclaims at the end,“Whatever challenges you have in life, if you think you can make the difference, we say you can!”

I cannot agree with it more! =)

Watch the film and be inspired!

May 22, 2011

In Bangkok, there’s a cool restaurant called Cabbages and Condoms that promotes the use of condom and contraceptives in an amusing way.   There’re art installations made by colourful condoms and a wide collection of perculiarly-designed condoms from all over the world.  Last year, following the scandal about Tiger Woods, a statue of him was made to promote safe sex. On a list by Lonely Planet, it ranks number one as a must-do thing in Bangkok.

Founder of the Restaurant Mechai Viravaidya is named “Condom King” in Thailand.  He never runs out of cool ideas: condom relay, condom-blowing contests, and he even invited monks to bless contraceptives, so that public members would be more willing to use them.  During traffic jam, cops would hand out free condoms to drivers.  He told CNNgo, “from 1991 to 2003, new cases of HIV/AIDS in Thailand declined by 90 percent. That translates into 7.7 million lives saves.”

Eating also brings changes.

May 13, 2011

(The Organization of Urban Re-s)的團體,簡稱OURs,Re-s代表Re-design、Re-plan、Re-build、Review、Revolution。

Hong Kong is not alone in its development problems: buildings rapidly being torn down, accelerating property price and the depreciation of community.Taipei also confronts these issues.  In the past twenty years, a Taiwanese NGO named “The Organization of Urban Re-s” (OURs) has been actively promoting urban policy changes to make public space accessible to all.  Re-s stand for Re-design, Re-plan, Re-build, Review and Revolution.

A recent fun project OURs did is to engage public members to protect 70 pieces of temporary green areas dotted the city landscape.  They host creative art fairs at one of those green areas and encouraged young people to explore various ways to enjoy the green amidst the hustle and bustle of Taipei.

Don’t you want to lie down on the grass in Taipei just by seeing the poster?

Change starts with passion

May 12, 2011

Begin with your passion, and you will realize that your seemingly ordinary hobby has this immense power to bring positive change.
A group of young bikers in Bangkok started a bike messenger business that allows them to do good through doing what they dearly love doing. Co-founder Nonlany Ungwiwatkul used to fix donated bikes at the Thai Cycling Association, but she soon found that the demand for bikes from disprivileged children was far greater than supply. So she started asking herself how she could help. Having watched the Messenger, a Japanese movie about an urban bike messenger, she started pondering on the idea of starting her own green business.

The concept is easy. Customers simply have to place orders on the company facebook page, and BikeXenger would send the nearest bike messenger to deliever the goods. Anything portable can go onto the bike. Surprisingly, even though the fee is not cheaper than conventional motorbike delievery, the public is generally quite receptive to BikeXenger. A lot of the firms identify with BikeXenger’s mission of lowering carbon emission, promoting a bike-friendly city and making the pleasure of biking possible to all children.

Now you see that change starts with passion, would you want to know more about how young people bring positive change to their community doing what they love? Join MaD Trips to be inspired and be empowered!

A GOOD gift for grandmama

May 8, 2011

MaD.asia.

What should we give to mum on Mother’s Day?

Having been visiting relatives who live in care homes for years, UK designer Gregor Timlin notices that a lot of the tablewares, crockery and even tables are designed for the average people only.  Staff have to spoonfeed the elderly and mop up after each meal.  He came up with a range of utensils that seek to allow elderly to eat with pleasure and dignity.

  • Plate with contrasting colours to help visually-impaired people to see the food clearly
  • Plate with high-lipped profile to help get food onto spoon
  • Double-skinned ceramic cup for easy grip

Seeing beauty with your ears

May 7, 2011

Photo: Reuters

Three-year old bridesmaid Grace van Cutsem stole the scene when she showed her displease at the royal wedding.  Perhaps the sound from the massive crowds and the spectacular Royal Air Force flyover was a bit too much.  Very often we notice the existence of our ears in noisy environment.  Have we ever felt the beauty of small things with ears?

A London-based product designer Christina Biliouri came up with an experiment using glasses of different heights.  The nicely-designed volumetric tubes and bubbles of different volumes function like sound boxes.  When we drink and tilt the glass, we hear beautiful aural effect and playfully interact with the water.

With this collection of drinking glass, visually-impaired people feel the flowing water, others learn to hear the beauty around us.

May 6, 2011

Small things that change everything

Now we have drinking straws in all sorts of fancy designs.  Do you know that the first drinking tubes were actually made of glass?  Even though straws made by paraffined manila paper came along later, they cracked easily and were not quite hygienic. And the straight shape makes it even more frustrating for little kids; they have to bend the straw to drink from a tall glass.  One day an American called Joseph Friedman saw his little daughter having trouble drinking with her soda straw.  He came up with an idea and made a flexible plastic straw which has a corrugated section, allowing it to bend to any angle easily.  Not only little kids are fascinated by it.  Bed-ridden patients could have medicine much more easily with this flexible straw.

Flexible straw was invented in 1938.  And we still benefit from this seemingly simple design.  Cool, huh?

May 3, 2011

Empathy brings GOOD LIVES

MaD.asia

Normally front pocket is sewed on the left hand side of a jacket.  It’s convenient for right-handers, but not so for those born left-handed.  Using the front pocket may become such a pain that they may simply have to stop using it.  If only the pocket is sewed also on the right side, their life will be so much more easier and happier.  The same is true for rulers, scissors and trousers back pockets.  If you’re unhappy with the current design of these products, you can make a difference with your empathy and creativity.  It’s too bad that this kind of thinking has not sunk in yet in Hong Kong.

The pair of scissors shown above is friendly to both right-handers and left-handers.  You can also experiment on inclusive design.  Hurry up and register for “MaD x DESIGN.LIVES” now!
