How does it work?

April 27, 2011

Gel (Good Experience Life Conference) Conference上講解如何設計人人friendly的產品。

Have you ever had this experience?  When you use a measuring cup, you somehow have to kneel down or bring the cup to your eyes to see clearly what’s inside.  What if you have difficulty bending down or carrying a whole cup of stuff, wouldn’t using the measuring cup a frustrating experience?  In the US, a designer came up of an idea when he saw his wife having a hard time handling this kitchen gadget.  He realized that with an inclined measuring rule, anyone can see how much the cup holds from above.

Alex Lee, the CEO of the company which produces this kind of measuring cups spoke at the Gel Conference.  Now you can view the clip at http://vimeo.com/3200945 and learn how to develop a designer mindset to make our lives better.

Slavery is still in practice

April 11, 2011

Make a Difference: http://thecnnfreedomproject.blogs.cnn.com/

A few days ago, we explained the term “piglet selling” to one of our team members. We thought the term, historically used to describe human trafficking during the Gold Rush, was out. But we are appalled to learn that slavery is still in practice. According to the CNN Freedom Project, the estimated number of modern-day slaves is 10,000,000 to 30,000,000! Poor people are cheated and forced to work in Dickensian conditions in factories, on fishing boats and in brothels. Chances are we unknowingly have a share in this while we consume.

If you believe freedom is a basic right, check this out to see how you can make a difference: http://thecnnfreedomproject.blogs.cnn.com/

In Search of Lost AI

April 6, 2011

The MaD Team just came back from a trip to Guangzhou. On the day when AI Weiwei disappeared, we learnt that a secretly recorded talk by him was shown at TED this year. After a long discussion on China’s current situation, we witnessed how the TV screen went blank when the news of AI’s detainment came up on CNN.

When Chris ANDERSON, curator of TED, introduced AI, he said:
“TED is a non-partisan organization. We have no formal stance for or against the Chinese government. We’ve had plenty of talks here in the past celebrating the astonishing things happening in China, including the largest escape from poverty of more people than any other time in human history. But we are proud to present the personal statement of a courageous artist.”

“What we can do as individuals is to use the internet and new technology to communicate with young people and to have much broader discussions… to make the change because it will come.” – AI Weiwei
